Smell is Important.
You may not have thought of this before but what your guest smell as they walk in is important. You can make a difference by buying yourself an oil diffuser or scented candles. You can even take a stove pot and add some water, cinnamon, orange slices, lemon or a little essential oil, etc. Have it cook for as long as you like on low heat. You just add more water once in a while when you notice it drying up. Usually with the smell of cinnamon your guests walk in and will comment, “Mmm, what are you cooking?”
I don't like to burn incense sticks unless I know all my guest are ok around it. Some people can be allergic to the smoke and keep sneezing all night and some can find the smell too strong.
If you are having a dinner with girlfriends I find the majority of people like to have a big bouquet of Lilacs on their kitchen or living room table. Adding some in your bathroom is also nice for your guest to find.

Light up the Night!
If you are having an event that takes place at night or might go to dark I suggest lighting it up. One of the easy and cheap ways is by using your old Christmas lights (on Boxing Day it's a good idea to buy a little extra for your upcoming parties). You can either hang the lights on your ceiling making a “triple cross”, you can have them going over door frames and tie them back like they were drapes. For outdoors have them following your porch railing, drape in trees, or lay them around the floor of your porch walls as a guide to where to walk. For a bigger statement you can have the lights following your fence! You can buy these garland lights sometimes with décor already attached. Like little painted boxes around the light.
Always remember it's safest to pay a little more for good quality lights. Read the warning instructions that come with your lights. Usually you can put no more than three garland lights on one extension cord.
You can also find battery operated tea light “candles” at either pharmacies or home departments. These are handy because they can be used anywhere and you don't have to worry about anything burning or blowing them out at the end of your night. And they still have the “flickering” look like a candle.
You can place them in tall empty vases or glasses such as Martini glasses. Put them on shelves, tables, fences and etc. Outdoors or in. You can also buy little diamond-like lights that are waterproof. They can glow in sometimes white or blue, etc. They look beautiful when you add them to a vase full of flowers or a tray of ice (with your cold drinks).
Of course one of the most beautiful ways to light up your night is by using candles. I usually try to use simple white, medium sized pillar candles. Always remember that sometimes paying a little extra for better quality candles is the smart and safest way to go. By paying a little more you usually don't have to worry about wax dripping on your floors or tables, they burn for longer and they sometimes have very beautiful smells to them.
